Bird baths and fountains work well at attracting wildlife into your yard. However, you can also find them in colorful designs and vintage styles to create a beautiful focal point in your garden. This simple 4-step DIY project shows you how to set up a ceramic bird bath fountain – without spending a lot of time or money doing it.
I like this ceramic bird bath because has an elegant design, vibrant colors with a handmade look. It actually looks custom-made, but it’s not expensive like you might expect.
The biggest issue I have with this pedestal bird bowl is that it commonly runs out of stock. So, I found a second option at the Sunnydaze website that looks similar and also has a rich, blue color.
Note: This birdbath measures less than 2 feet tall, so it’s not large. This comes with both pros and cons, depending on how you want to set it up.
For example, the shorter height makes it more stable, and of course keeps the price lower. However, you may not be able to see it well if you place it too far from your home.
How to Set Up the Pedestal Bird Bath with a Solar Pump:
1. First of all, choose a place on your patio or in your landscaping that will receive a good amount of sun during the day. You may also want to set it up where you can see it from inside your home as well as outside.
In addition, don’t place it underneath a tree or near landscaping that can drop leaves into the water. You’ll end up cleaning your birdbath more often than you want to.
2. Second, the birdbath comes in 2 parts: the bath bowl and the pedestal stand. You simply twist the bowl clockwise on top of the pedestal to secure it into position.
3. Next, fill the basin with water. It holds approximately 1 gallon. The wide, shallow design of the bowl works well for small birds. The drawback, however, is that the water can evaporated quickly on hot sunny days, and you’ll need to add water more frequently.
4. Last, place a solar birdbath bubbler in the water. These self-operating fountains run independently from the bird bath itself, which gives you more options as far as style, features and price.
Depending on how high you fill the bowl, the disc may float around or sit on the bottom. (The dish is shaped similar to a saucer – it is only 1.5 inches deep.)
Either way, it will run on its own without you having to plug it in or turn it on. Keep in mind that solar fountains run optimally when they get lots of sun. So, if you set up your bird bath in the shade, it may have trouble running consistently. You’ll be better off getting unit with a movable solar panel.
Note: Every so often, you will need to add more water to the basin as the moisture evaporates. Other than that, the fountain requires very little care, since the battery recharges everyday to keep the fountain running. And, the LED lights turn on automatically at dusk.
